Michael Jackson fans prove key to release of new Sony smartphones in Australia

SONY’S next smartphone may be available in Australia before the end of May — at least according to the late Michael Jackson.

Sony’s announced that buyers of its Xperia Z2, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z2 Tablet and Xperia M2 will be able to score a free copy of Michael Jackson’s upcoming posthumous album XSCAPE on the day of release, which happens to be May 14th in Australia.

There’s a twist here, though, as a number of the devices, including the high-end Sony Xperia Z2 haven’t actually had firm Australian release dates announced just yet.

But did Michael’s minions just let the cat out of the bag?

What’s interesting in that list is the fact that the promotion starts on the 14th of May, but runs through to the end of May in terms of devices sold. Redemption of the album has to occur before the end of June, but it only applies to devices sold up until the end of May.

In other words, buy an eligible Sony Xperia between now and May 31st, get a free Michael Jackson album, similar to a deal that Samsung struck with Jay Z last year.

Sony even makes the point of mentioning that XSCAPE has been mastered in a way to take advantage of the Z2’s high resolution audio mode, which Sony dubs ClearAudio+.

In order for Australians to be eligible for the free album deal, as per Sony’s own terms and conditions, the phones would have to be available by the end of May.

We knew these smartphones were coming, but now we know they’re coming sooner rather than later.
